Fire extinguishers play a critical role in the first line of defense against fire, and they are colour-coded to allow for quick and easy identification in an emergency. However, knowing which extinguisher to use for specific types of fires is just as important as having them on hand. That’s why training your staff in the proper identification and use of fire extinguishers is essential to ensuring the safety of everyone in your building.
Fire extinguishers are classified into five types, each designed for specific types of fires:
• Class A: Fires involving ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, and plastics.
• Class B: Fires caused by flammable liquids like petrol, oils, and solvents.
• Class C: Fires involving flammable gases such as propane and butane.
• Class F: Fires involving high-temperature cooking oils or fats, commonly found in kitchens.
• Electrical Fires: Fires involving live electrical equipment. These should be tackled using extinguishers rated for electrical use, such as CO2 or dry powder extinguishers.
- Fire Type Classification A
- Water extinguishers are an affordable and efficient solution for tackling Class A fires, which involve solid combustible materials like paper, textiles, and wood. However, since water conducts electricity, it’s crucial not to use these extinguishers near electrical equipment unless they contain additives that make them safe for such use.
- Fire Type Classification A & B
- Foam extinguishers are highly effective for both Class A fires (solid combustible materials) and Class B fires (flammable liquids). They work by forming a seal over the liquid’s surface, preventing flammable vapors from escaping and cutting off the fire’s fuel source. The foam also creates a protective layer, preventing re-ignition after the fire is extinguished.
- Fire Type Classification A, B, C
- Powder extinguishers are ideal for environments with mixed fire risks, offering versatile protection across Class A (solid combustibles), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class C (flammable gases) fires. They are the only extinguishers effective against gas fires. While suitable for electrical fires, it’s important to note that powder extinguishers do not cool the fire, meaning there’s a risk of re-ignition.
- Fire Type Classification B
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extinguishers are highly effective for Class B fires (flammable liquids) and are ideal for environments with electrical equipment, such as offices. They work by displacing oxygen and cutting off the fire’s air supply, quickly smothering the flames. CO2 extinguishers leave no residue, making them one of the cleanest options available for fire suppression.
- Fire Type Classification A, F
- Wet Chemical extinguishers are specially designed for Class F fires, making them the best choice for tackling fires involving cooking oils and fats. This makes them ideal for use in restaurants, commercial kitchens, and canteens. While they can also be used on Class A fires (solid combustibles), they are primarily intended for kitchen fires. Wet Chemical extinguishers work by rapidly knocking down the flames, cooling the burning oil or fat, and forming a soap-like seal on the surface to prevent re-ignition.
- Fire Type Classification A, B, C, F
- Water Mist extinguishers use advanced technology that allows them to be safely used on electrical fires as well as Class A (solid combustibles), Class B (flammable liquids), Class C (flammable gases), and Class F (cooking oils and fats) fires. By creating a fine ‘mist curtain’ around the fire, these extinguishers protect nearby individuals while removing the fire’s oxygen and fuel source. The mist cools the fire continuously, preventing re-ignition and ensuring complete extinguishment.
